Trump Issues Executive Order on AI Cybersecurity, Excluding Mandatory Testing

Deep News06-03

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order focused on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, directing government agencies to collaborate with AI companies to defend networks against AI-powered cyberattacks.

The order, unveiled by the White House on Tuesday, grants the U.S. government access to advanced AI tools, known as "frontier models," prior to their release, based on voluntary participation from companies.

It also establishes a cybersecurity information clearinghouse to coordinate efforts and address software vulnerabilities that could threaten national security.

Government bodies will develop confidential benchmarks to assess the cybersecurity capabilities of AI models and determine which systems should fall under the order's purview.

The policy, which had been the subject of internal debate, addresses the extent of the government's role in testing new AI models before they become publicly available.

While officials had considered mandating government approval for new AI systems prior to release, the final order emphasizes voluntary cooperation from developers.

The Trump administration accelerated its existing AI policy efforts in response to a range of security concerns, a task led by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, following a breakthrough by Anthropic PBC's Mythos.
