Minor grains are forging a new path for rural revitalization in Jingning County. In recent years, leveraging its regional resource advantages, Jingning County has tailored its approach to foster and expand the distinctive industry of minor grains, exploring a new route to rural prosperity characterized by a solid industrial foundation, a complete industrial chain, and stable income growth for residents.
Zhang Junjun, a large-scale grower in Zhangzhu Village, Gangou Town, Jingning County, cultivated a total of 200 mu (approximately 13.3 hectares) of minor grains this year, including beans, millet, broomcorn millet, and buckwheat. To revitalize land resources, the town has upgraded over 23,000 mu (about 1,533 hectares) into high-standard farmland, consolidating scattered slopes and fragmented plots into contiguous, intensive fields, thereby strengthening the land foundation for stable and abundant grain production. "Now the plots are concentrated and contiguous, making farming more convenient and efficient. Large agricultural machinery can operate directly in the fields, significantly reducing farming costs," Zhang Junjun stated.
Zhang Junjun's minor grain plots are part of Gangou Town's 4,000-mu (about 267 hectares) standardized demonstration base for minor grains. The base provides integrated services such as unified supply of improved seeds, application of organic fertilizers, mechanized operations, and green pest control. Agricultural technicians are stationed in the fields to offer technical guidance throughout the process, comprehensively safeguarding grain security.
It is reported that Gangou Town has innovatively implemented a development model of "Party branch + cooperative + base + farmers," encouraging hundreds of households to collaborate and engage in large-scale cultivation of minor grains. This approach not only effectively broadens farmers' income channels, continuously boosting their earnings, but also steadily strengthens the village collective economy, making minor grains a solid pillar empowering rural revitalization. Wang Jixiang, a villager from Mudan Village in Gangou Town, cultivated 85 mu (about 5.7 hectares) of minor grains this year. She explained, "Previously, growing buckwheat was only for self-sufficiency, with low yields and meager profits. Now, agricultural experts provide on-site guidance on scientific planting techniques, and the harvested grains are directly supplied to processing plants, eliminating concerns about sales. The annual income from buckwheat alone reaches over 30,000 yuan, doubling the previous earnings."
Jingning County is located in the hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau, where the unique cool climate and ample sunlight are highly suitable for drought-resistant minor grains like broomcorn millet, millet, and buckwheat, providing inherent advantages for industrial development. Leveraging these favorable natural conditions, towns such as Gangou and Sanhe have deepened their focus on the minor grain industry, maintaining a stable cultivation area of over 50,000 mu (about 3,333 hectares) annually. Through measures including improved seed varieties, standardized planting, extended industrial chains, and innovative development models, the local area vigorously supports grain processing enterprises and the construction of large-scale cultivation bases, enhancing the reputation of local high-quality minor grain brands and establishing a complete industrial chain from field cultivation to market sales. These small grains are not only helping farmers increase their incomes but also becoming a new growth engine for county-wide rural revitalization.
