Multiple sources indicate that NTT Data Group, a subsidiary of Japanese telecom giant NTT, is in the final stages of negotiations to construct a data center in Osaka, western Japan, for U.S. artificial intelligence company Anthropic.
The construction cost of the project could reach as high as 1 trillion yen, equivalent to approximately $6.3 billion, according to the sources.
This would mark Anthropic's first dedicated facility in Japan.
The data center is expected to have a power connection capacity of up to 500 megawatts and is anticipated to begin partial operations as early as 2028.
NTT Data Group and Anthropic plan to sign an agreement before the end of the 2026 fiscal year, which concludes on March 31.
