During the first half of this year, the domestic molybdenum market has experienced a sustained and robust upward trend. A manager at a Chinese smelting subsidiary of a major molybdenum producer provided a striking example: a one-tonne batch priced at 332,000 yuan on July 14th had been valued at 330,500 yuan just the day before, representing a single-day increase of 1,500 yuan. This product is ferromolybdenum, produced by smelting and processing molybdenum concentrate. It serves as a crucial alloy additive supplied in large quantities to special steel manufacturers. Cumulatively, ferromolybdenum prices have risen by nearly 30% in the first half of the year.

Market Dynamics and Supply Constraints

Industry experts point out that the core driver of this persistent price strength is a structural supply tightness in the molybdenum market. Furthermore, technological advancements in emerging fields such as next-generation displays, perovskite photovoltaics, and semiconductors are opening up entirely new avenues for growth within the molybdenum industry. This shift is propelling the molybdenum market's evolution from meeting basic industrial needs towards supplying high-end new materials.

Semiconductor Sector Drives New Demand

A significant material shift is underway in the semiconductor memory industry. Several leading global memory chip manufacturers are adopting molybdenum metal to replace traditional tungsten in their next-generation ultra-high-layer chip architectures. Analysts note that molybdenum's lower electrical resistance and its ability to be directly deposited without a barrier layer make it a necessary technological choice for advancing memory chip manufacturing processes.

An executive from a major commodity data provider's ferroalloy division commented that while the current volume from the memory chip sector is relatively small—primarily contributing to valuation and sentiment premiums—its long-term growth potential is substantial. It is anticipated that within 3 to 5 years, this will transition from a conceptual theme to tangible demand growth. Overall, long-term structural tailwinds from global energy transition, high-end manufacturing, and AI computing industry upgrades are in play.
