Linxia Prefecture Accelerates Cultural Tourism Growth, Achieving Comprehensive Development Milestones

Deep News11-21

Linxia Prefecture in Gansu Province has reported remarkable growth in its cultural tourism sector during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period (2021–2025). Tourist arrivals surged from 11.98 million in 2020 to 43.85 million in 2024, marking an average annual growth rate of 38.3%. Tourism revenue also soared from RMB 5.92 billion to RMB 23.38 billion during the same period, reflecting a 41.0% annual increase.

Leveraging its Yellow River cultural heritage and natural landscapes, Linxia has prioritized tourism as a pillar industry, transforming into a nationally renowned Yellow River-themed destination. The region has shifted from potential cultivation to comprehensive development, achieving significant milestones.

**Key Achievements:** - **Branding & Resource Integration:** The Linxia Geological Park gained UNESCO Global Geopark status, while the Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Site was designated a 5A-level scenic area. Yongjing County’s Liujiaxia and Hezheng County’s Fataishan were recognized as provincial-level tourism resorts and ski destinations, respectively. The Taizi Mountain Tourism Corridor was listed among China’s first pilot projects for transport-tourism integration. Additionally, two museums—Linxia Prefecture Museum and Hezheng Paleontological Fossil Museum—were upgraded to national first-tier status. The prefecture now boasts 44 3A-level or above scenic spots, adding 25 during the "14th Five-Year Plan." Two major tourism loops along Taizi Mountain and around Bingling Lake have been established, creating a "scenic everywhere" tourism framework.

- **Cultural Preservation & Innovation:** Efforts include archaeological exploration at Xinzhuangping and Linjia sites, along with heritage conservation projects. The intangible cultural heritage of "Hua'er" folk music has been safeguarded through regulatory revisions and master planning. Traditional arts like brick carving have been revitalized, with immersive performances enhancing cultural appeal.

- **Industry Diversification:** Linxia has integrated tourism with agriculture, commerce, and sports. Annual events like the China Hua’er Festival and seasonal flower tourism have boosted rural and agritourism. Local specialties such as "Hezhou Flavors" cuisine and非遗文创 (intangible cultural heritage-inspired products) have gained traction. Sports tourism, including village basketball (村BA) and skiing, has flourished, offering new experiential travel options.

Looking ahead to the "15th Five-Year Plan," Linxia aims to further develop tourism as a leading industry, positioning itself as a premier Yellow River destination and a "summer retreat and wellness hub." The sector is expected to drive economic growth, employment, and ethnic unity, contributing to Gansu’s broader tourism ambitions.
