AT&T Inc is planning to move its global headquarters from downtown Dallas to nearby Plano, a move that will deliver another heavy blow to the city's struggling central business district. The company intends to occupy the former Electronic Data Systems headquarters in Plano, a location situated approximately 23 miles north of its current headquarters. AT&T aims to begin occupying parts of the new office campus in the second half of 2028. As the sixth-largest employer in Dallas, AT&T's headquarters building houses approximately 6,000 employees. This departure from the city center continues a multi-year trend of companies leaving urban cores, a pattern that has accelerated since the pandemic due to rising crime rates and increasing numbers of homeless individuals. According to data from real estate analytics firm CoStar, downtown Dallas currently holds the second-highest office vacancy rate in the United States at a staggering 27.2%, trailing only Seattle.
