On October 24, with a simple click by the customs officer, the 10,001st Macao vehicle qualified for entry and exit into the Hengqin Cooperation Zone was successfully recorded, marking a new chapter in the seamless connectivity between Macao and Hengqin. Since August 22, 2022, relevant authorities have fully relaxed the quota for the entry of non-operational passenger vehicles from Macao into the Hengqin Cooperation Zone, removing the previous limit of 10,000 vehicles. This pivotal policy has acted like a "fast forward" button for the integration between Macao and Hengqin, significantly boosting the enthusiasm of Macao residents to work and live in the cooperation zone. Currently, the number of Macao vehicles crossing between the two regions has steadily increased to an average of 5,970 vehicles daily.
To accommodate the growing volume of vehicles passing through, the Hengqin customs has upgraded its infrastructure, facilitating the use of dedicated inspection areas to shorten clearance distances. On the software side, efforts are being enhanced through smart initiatives, including a "one-stop" registration service, streamlined vehicle clearance procedures, and the implementation of electronic labels for simplified passage, thereby improving the cross-border experience.
Since the implementation of the split management policy for the Hengqin Cooperation Zone, a series of supportive measures have been enacted in tandem. The tax exemption policy has benefited four batches of imported equipment for the Macao University of Science and Technology's Innovation and Technology Research Institute, promoting the integration of industry, education, and research. Additionally, streamlined customs measures for plant and animal products have provided Macao residents with a more rewarding "dual-city life." The steady traffic flow represents a significant step forward for Macao residents regarding learning, employment, entrepreneurship, and living in the Hengqin Cooperation Zone, indicating that the expressway for the integration of Macao and Hengqin is continually extending, injecting endless momentum into their high-quality developmental cooperation.
