On December 17 local time, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated that despite the company's previously announced $100 billion investment plan to collaborate with OpenAI on building a massive data center, no payments have been made to OpenAI so far. The actual progress of this colossal partnership remains in its early stages.
Although the investment has yet to materialize, the framework for collaboration between the two parties is already defined, potentially reshaping the global AI computing landscape. Huang emphasized that all funding will be deployed progressively based on project milestones and technical requirements to ensure efficient resource allocation.
In September this year, NVIDIA and OpenAI unveiled what could be termed an "epic" strategic partnership, with NVIDIA planning to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI.
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly develop and deploy unprecedented AI infrastructure. The centerpiece of this initiative is the construction of AI data centers with a total capacity of at least 10 gigawatts, housing millions of NVIDIA GPUs. This infrastructure is expected to serve as the super-engine for OpenAI to train and operate its next-generation AI models, ultimately advancing toward the goal of achieving "superintelligence."
To support this ambitious vision, NVIDIA will undertake a staggering investment: for every gigawatt of data center capacity deployed, NVIDIA will incrementally invest in OpenAI, with the total amount potentially reaching $100 billion. This investment not only marks the largest single commitment in the history of AI but also underscores NVIDIA's strong confidence in OpenAI's technological roadmap.
