Hubei Native Yuan Xinyi Awarded Major International Prize Worth Approximately 7 Million Yuan

On August 13, the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research issued a congratulatory message for Professor Yuan Xinyi, who has been awarded the 2026 Future Science Prize.

On August 13, 2026, the Future Science Prize Committee officially announced the 2026 laureates. This year's "Mathematics and Computer Science Prize" was awarded to Professor Yuan Xinyi of the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research at Peking University, in recognition of "his foundational contributions to the field of arithmetic geometry, particularly the creation of the theory of arithmetic bigness in Arakelov geometry, and its pioneering application to the uniform Bogomolov conjecture and the uniform Mordell conjecture." The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong this November.

Professor Yuan Xinyi's research areas are number theory and arithmetic geometry, with his main work focusing on Arakelov geometry, Diophantine geometry, arithmetic dynamics, Shimura varieties, and L-functions. He has made breakthrough contributions in these areas and is a leading international mathematician in related fields. In early 2020, he resigned from his tenured professorship at the University of California, Berkeley, and returned to Peking University to join the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research, where he currently serves as a Chair Professor.

After returning to China, he continued to advance his work in related fields: collaborating with Zhang Shouwu to develop the theory of adelic line bundles; independently completing the proof of the uniform Bogomolov conjecture over global fields; collaborating with Xie Junyi to completely solve the geometric Bogomolov conjecture and achieve a breakthrough on the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture; and collaborating with Yu Jiawei and Zhou Shengyuan to prove a quantitative version of the Mordell conjecture. In recognition of his outstanding academic achievements, he has been invited to deliver a 45-minute report at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians.

Established in 2016, the Future Science Prize is China's first private science award, co-initiated by a group of scientists and entrepreneurs. The "Mathematics and Computer Science Prize" was first awarded in 2017 and covers basic and applied research related to mathematics and computer science. Winning work must meet conditions such as "having a significant international impact" and "being original, of long-term importance, and/or having stood the test of time." In 2017, Professor Xu Chenyang was awarded the inaugural Future Science Prize in Mathematics and Computer Science for his "profound contributions to birational algebraic geometry."

It is understood that the single prize for the Future Science Award is $1 million USD (approximately 7 million RMB).

Yuan Xinyi, born in 1981 in Songbu Town, Macheng City, Hubei Province, attended Songbu Longjing Middle School, Songbu Town Middle School, and Huanggang High School. He won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2000, earning a spot at Peking University. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University in 2003 and received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Columbia University in the United States in 2008. That same year, he was awarded the prestigious Clay Research Fellowship and conducted postdoctoral research at the Clay Mathematics Institute in the United States. He served as an assistant professor at Princeton University from 2011 to 2012, and as an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley from 2012, becoming an associate professor in July 2018. In January 2020, Yuan Xinyi returned to Peking University as a Chair Professor at the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research.

Yuan Xinyi was the first Chinese recipient of the Clay Research Award from the Clay Mathematics Institute in the United States. He received the 2022 Science Exploration Award and the 2025 International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) Gold Medal in Mathematics. In January 2026, at the grand opening of the 10th International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians, Yuan Xinyi was awarded the ICCM Gold Medal in Mathematics, known as the "Chinese Fields Medal." At the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians on July 23, Yuan Xinyi was also invited as a plenary speaker, witnessing the awarding of the Fields Medal to his fellow alumni Wang Hong and Deng Yu.
