Google is leveraging its latest Android system release to transform Gemini from a chatbot into an operational layer spanning phones, browsers, cars, and laptops. This move comes just weeks before Apple is expected to showcase its own Gemini-powered "Apple Intelligence" relaunch at WWDC.
Ahead of the upcoming Google I/O developer conference next week, the company previewed several Android updates. These include AI-driven app automation, a smarter version of Chrome for Android, new tools for creators, a redesigned Android Auto experience, and a comprehensive suite of new security features.
Alphabet is counting on Gemini to help Google compete directly with OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI model and services market. Simultaneously, it is positioning Gemini as the AI backbone for its vast product portfolio, including Android. Meanwhile, Gemini also provides partial foundational support for Apple's new AI strategy, meaning Google plays a role in Apple's innovation even as it strives to demonstrate the superiority of its own personal mobile AI version.
Sameer Samat, who oversees Google's Android ecosystem, stated that Google is rebuilding parts of Android around "Gemini Intelligence" to help users complete daily tasks more easily.
"We are transitioning from an operating system to an intelligent system," he said.
As part of Tuesday's announcements, Google stated that Gemini Intelligence will be able to move across applications, understand on-screen content, and complete tasks that typically require users to switch between multiple services. This signifies Android is moving beyond the traditional assistant model—where the user asks and the system answers—to behave more like an intelligent agent.
For example, Google said Gemini could extract relevant information from Gmail, build shopping carts, and book restaurants. Samat illustrated this by describing a scenario: asking Gemini to review a guest list for a barbecue party, plan a menu, add ingredients to an Instacart shopping cart, and return for user confirmation before checkout.
A major concern with agent AI is software taking actions on a user's behalf without permission. Samat emphasized that Gemini will return to the user for confirmation before completing transactions, adding, "The human is always in the loop."
Four months after announcing its partnership with Google's Gemini, Apple is under pressure to demonstrate a more powerful "Apple Intelligence" as its product is perceived to be playing catch-up in the market. Apple has consistently highlighted privacy, hardware integration, and user experience control as its key advantages.
Google's Android strategy aims to show that it can integrate AI more deeply into the device experience while still giving users control over what Gemini can see, where it can act, and when confirmation is required.
The app automation features will roll out in phases, starting with the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer, and expanding to more Android devices later this year, including watches, cars, glasses, and laptops.
The company is also redesigning Android Auto around Gemini, turning the car into another primary interface for its assistant. Android Auto is already available in over 250 million vehicles. Google stated the new version includes the biggest map update in a decade, along with Gemini-powered assistance features like ordering food while driving.
Alphabet's AI strategy has been well-received on Wall Street, with its stock price rising over 140% in the past year, compared to Apple's approximate 40% gain. Investors are now eager to see how Gemini can be more deeply integrated into the products people use daily.
