Severe weather conditions have triggered a significant number of flight diversions at Shanghai's major airports today.
Beginning this evening, the entire Shanghai area issued simultaneous warnings for three types of severe weather: a yellow alert for thunderstorms and a blue alert for strong winds. At 8:34 PM, an additional blue alert for heavy rain in the central urban districts was issued. Pudong District faced even more severe warnings, with yellow alerts for both heavy rain and hail, forecasting the possibility of hail and intense, short-duration downpours in local areas before midnight.
From 7:55 PM to 10:00 PM, Pudong Airport experienced intermittent heavy thunderstorms affecting its runways and surrounding airspace. The conditions were accompanied by strong crosswinds, low-level wind shear, and severe turbulence, with a local risk of hail. Hongqiao Airport was also impacted as the thunderstorm system passed through, resulting in concentrated short-term rainfall and fluctuating visibility.
The consequence of this extreme weather event was a massive number of flight diversions at Shanghai's two primary airports today.
Flight tracking data indicates that from the afternoon into the evening, over 90 flights were diverted to Pudong Airport, with a substantial number of these diversions still ongoing.
At Hongqiao Airport, more than 40 flights were diverted.
The operational disruptions at these key aviation hubs, including Shanghai International Airport Co.,Ltd. (SHA: 600009), highlight the significant impact of the severe weather on air traffic.
