Hydrogen-Powered Bicycles Deployed in Baotou, Inner Mongolia

Deep News06-01

Recently, China's independently developed hydrogen-powered bicycles have been put into public operation in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The first batch of 1,000 vehicles will be deployed in public areas and for public convenience services, initially establishing a significant application scenario for solid-state hydrogen storage technology in civilian transportation.

According to reports, these hydrogen-powered bicycles are equipped with self-developed rare earth solid-state hydrogen storage alloy core materials. A single full hydrogen charge allows for a range of over 100 kilometers, and the vehicles can operate normally in temperatures as low as -30°C. In winter, the actual range remains above 90%, effectively addressing the issue of reduced range in cold northern regions. Additionally, thanks to low-pressure solid-state hydrogen storage technology, the hydrogen storage pressure in these bicycles is low, and they are equipped with an intelligent monitoring platform that tracks key indicators such as pressure and temperature in real-time, ensuring stable and reliable safety performance. Since the vehicles are entirely powered by hydrogen-generated electricity, the energy conversion process produces no exhaust gases or pollutants, with the only byproduct being pure water, achieving zero carbon emissions throughout the operation.

It is reported that the key core technologies for these hydrogen-powered bicycles come from China Northern Rare Earth (Group) High-Tech Co., Ltd. During the research and development process, Northern Rare Earth overcame key technical bottlenecks in hydrogen storage and release, independently developing rare earth hydrogen storage alloys. The volumetric hydrogen storage density can reach 55 kilograms per cubic meter, approximately three times that of high-pressure carbon fiber hydrogen storage tanks. The temperature tolerance range covers -30°C to 60°C, ensuring stable performance across all temperature zones, with the hydrogen storage bottle's cycle life exceeding 3,000 uses.

Liu Peixun, Chairman of Northern Rare Earth, stated that the hydrogen-powered bicycles have demonstrated excellent performance in terms of range, safety, stability, and adaptability, meeting the conditions for large-scale market deployment and widespread public adoption. Northern Rare Earth will adopt a phased approach of "batch deployment, gradual promotion, and steady expansion" to gradually deploy a total of 10,000 demonstration vehicles within the year, creating a large-scale application scenario for hydrogen-powered bicycles.
