Following the raid on the Paris office of social media platform X earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Justice has informed French law enforcement authorities that it will not provide assistance in their investigation into Elon Musk's company X.
In a two-page letter issued on Friday, the Office of International Affairs of the U.S. Department of Justice accused French authorities of improperly using their judicial system to interfere with a U.S. company.
According to a review of the letter, it stated: "This investigation seeks to leverage the French criminal legal system to regulate a public forum for the free expression of ideas and opinions in a manner inconsistent with the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution."
The letter also indicated that France's request for U.S. assistance was "an attempt to draw the United States into a politically motivated criminal proceeding aimed at improperly regulating the commercial activities of a social media platform through prosecution."
The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that the letter was sent to an international cooperation office within the French Ministry of Justice.
The Paris prosecutor's office overseeing the investigation stated it was not aware of the letter. The office added that French law guarantees judicial independence and that French prosecutors have sole authority over criminal investigations.
