On December 10, at Shengjing Painting Academy in Tongren City, Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, Thangka artist Xiawu Jiancuo carefully selected mineral pigments for his artwork. Regong Thangka, rooted in the region’s unique cultural ecosystem, is celebrated as a distinctive banner of traditional painting art. Today, many artists like Xiawu are passing down core techniques—such as pigment mixing, outlining, and gold tracing—to younger generations through structured apprenticeships and workshops, ensuring the continuity of this ancient craft.
The same day, at Shengjing Painting Academy, Xiawu Jiancuo demonstrated Thangka painting techniques to his students. Regong Thangka, renowned for its cultural richness, continues to thrive as artists systematically mentor apprentices and establish training studios to preserve its legacy.
Students were also seen observing Xiawu’s intricate works, some using magnifying glasses to appreciate the fine details. Regong Thangka’s enduring appeal lies in its deep cultural roots and meticulous craftsmanship, now being safeguarded through dedicated transmission efforts.
As Xiawu guided his pupils, the vibrant tradition of Regong Thangka painting unfolded—a testament to the enduring power of art to bridge generations.
