Multiple affected companies have confirmed that oil and petrochemical facilities in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain were damaged during drone attacks launched by Iran on Sunday.
In Kuwait, according to a statement from Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), the Shuwaikh Oil Complex, which houses the KPC headquarters and Kuwait's Ministry of Oil, was struck by a drone. The attack caused a fire and resulted in significant property damage. Several production facilities operated by KPC subsidiaries—Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) and Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC)—were also hit in separate drone strikes, leading to fires and severe property damage. KPC did not provide further details.
KNPC operates the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery, with a capacity of 346,000 barrels per day, and the Mina Abdullah refinery, capable of processing 454,000 barrels per day. PIC produces polypropylene, benzene, paraxylene, styrene monomer, polyethylene terephthalate, and various fertilizers, with approximately 60% of its output exported.
In the UAE, the Abu Dhabi Media Office reported that debris from successfully intercepted drones fell and ignited a fire at the Borouge petrochemical plant in the Ruwais Industrial City, causing facility damage. An assessment of the losses is still underway. Borouge is 54% owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and 36% by Borealis, with the remaining shares listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. The complex houses three ethane cracking units and has an annual production capacity of 2.63 million tons of polyethylene, 2.18 million tons of polypropylene, and 750,000 tons of olefins.
In Bahrain, a storage facility belonging to Bapco Energies was attacked by an Iranian drone, resulting in a fire in a storage tank. The fire was quickly extinguished, and the company is currently assessing the damage. No information has been released regarding the type of oil stored in the tank. Bapco Energies operates Bahrain's only refinery, the Sitra refinery located in Manama, which has a processing capacity of 267,000 barrels per day.
