Musk Predicts Widespread Adoption of Driverless Cars in the U.S. This Year

Elon Musk stated on Monday that he anticipates fully autonomous vehicles operating without human drivers will become more common across the United States later this year.

Speaking via video link at the "Smart Mobility Summit" in Tel Aviv, Musk noted that driverless cars are already operating without safety monitors in three cities in Texas and added that this model is set to expand nationwide within the year.

"In five years, or even ten years... approximately 90% of miles driven will be handled by artificial intelligence in autonomous vehicles," he said. "Thus, a decade from now, personally driving a car will become a relatively niche activity."
