Starting August 5th, domestic airline fuel surcharges have been reduced for the third consecutive month this year. Under the new rates, adult passengers on routes over 800 kilometers will pay 70 yuan, while those on routes of 800 kilometers or less will be charged 40 yuan. This ongoing reduction in fuel fees further lowers travel costs for passengers, injecting fresh momentum into the summer travel market.
Data from Meituan shows that on the day the fuel surcharge was cut, flight search volume surged 42% year-on-year. Cities including Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Shanghai saw the highest travel activity from residents and tourists. The top five most-booked routes are Beijing to Shanghai, Guangzhou to Shanghai, Guangzhou to Beijing, Chengdu to Sanya, and Chengdu to Urumqi.
With the summer travel peak in full swing, Meituan data indicates that families with children account for over 40% of summer travelers. Since July, flight bookings by family groups have increased by about 18% year-on-year, and searches related to family trips have grown by 26% month-on-month. Popular attractions include theme parks, natural landscapes, and water-based experiences. Top destinations favored by families include Shanghai Disney Resort, Universal Beijing Resort, Wansuishan Wuxia City, Hong Kong Disneyland, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai, the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, Qingdao Beer Museum, and Shenyang Imperial Palace.
Family travel often involves a series of minor challenges, such as pricing for adult and child tickets, required documents for boarding, and whether strollers can be checked in. This critical information is frequently scattered across different pages, making it time-consuming to find and compare. In response, Meituan Flights has introduced several services tailored for family travel. The booking page displays exclusive family discounts and offers double compensation if a better price is found elsewhere, saving families the hassle of repeated price comparisons. For any questions during booking, passengers can directly ask Meituan's AI assistant, "Xiaotuan," which provides purchase advice based on the family's travel needs. After an order is confirmed, the page generates a travel checklist, reminding users about required documents, luggage to pack, and security checkpoint tips, reducing pre-trip anxiety. According to Meituan data, since its launch, this feature has served 15,000 passengers, with "whether a stroller can be taken on the plane" being the most common concern among family groups.
A Meituan travel and hospitality executive stated that families have become one of the fastest-growing traveler segments during the summer. Meituan will continue to improve booking, itinerary planning, and travel preparation processes to enhance the overall user experience.
