First LNG Shipment Produced at Sempra and TotalEnergies' ECA Project in Mexico

Deep News06-05

Production of liquefied natural gas has commenced at Sempra Infrastructure's ECA LNG Phase 1 project in Ensenada, Mexico, a joint venture developed in partnership with TotalEnergies.

This LNG production is part of the pre-commercial operations commissioning process.

This milestone marks the start of LNG production at the export facility and moves the project closer to full operations, which are anticipated to be achieved within the coming months.

The ECA LNG facility is situated on Mexico's Pacific coast and is designed to supply U.S. natural gas to Asian and other Pacific Rim markets via shorter shipping routes compared to export terminals on the Gulf of Mexico.

The ECA LNG Phase 1 project includes a single liquefaction train with a nameplate annual production capacity of 3.25 million tonnes of LNG.

The project is underpinned by long-term sale and purchase agreements with TotalEnergies and Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

Sempra Infrastructure expects the project to reach substantial completion in the summer of 2026, with commercial operations and deliveries under the long-term agreements beginning shortly thereafter.

Development of a second phase for the LNG project is also advancing at the Ensenada site.

Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, stated: "This achievement reflects the dedication of the entire ECA LNG Phase 1 project team and their unwavering commitment to the highest standards of successful project development. The production of the first LNG cargo marks a key milestone on the path to full operations in the coming months, enabling the delivery of reliable and secure energy from the Pacific coast of North America to global markets."
