SoftBank Group's mobile unit announced plans to begin manufacturing large-scale batteries at its Sakai City plant in Osaka to meet the rising electricity demands of artificial intelligence services.
In a statement released on Monday, SoftBank Group stated it will collaborate with South Korean firms Cosmos Lab and DeltaX Co. to achieve mass production starting from the fiscal year beginning April next year. SoftBank aims to produce energy storage systems with an annual capacity of 1 gigawatt-hour. According to BloombergNEF data, this would make the facility one of the largest of its kind in Japan. Media reports last month indicated that SoftBank may later expand production capacity to several gigawatt-hours.
These batteries are intended for use in artificial intelligence data centers. SoftBank also plans to deploy the battery products for grid applications, factories, and other industrial and residential scenarios. The company noted that it will explore opportunities in global markets in the medium term. SoftBank targets annual revenue exceeding 100 billion yen from the new battery business by the fiscal year 2030.
