Meta Platforms has recruited Apple's top design executive, signaling the social media giant's aggressive push into AI-powered consumer hardware.
According to people familiar with the matter, Meta hired Alan Dye, who has led Apple's human interface design team since 2015. Apple will replace Dye with longtime designer Stephen Lemay, said the sources who requested anonymity as the information isn't public.
Apple confirmed the executive transition.
"Since 1999, Steve Lemay has played pivotal roles in designing every significant Apple interface," CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. "He consistently sets the highest standards for excellence and embodies Apple's culture of collaboration and creativity."
The move represents a significant shift in Silicon Valley's talent landscape and demonstrates Meta's determination to establish itself as a recognized hardware manufacturer. For Apple, Dye's departure continues the brain drain from its design team following the 2019 exit of legendary designer Jony Ive.
