Shichahai Ice Rink to Expand Beginner Training Area

As temperatures continue to drop in Beijing following the first snowfall of the season, many residents are eagerly anticipating the opening of the city’s ice rinks. The Shichahai Ice Rink, one of Beijing’s most popular winter destinations, will soon welcome visitors once the ice thickness meets safety standards. This year, the rink plans to expand its training area for beginners, offering more people the chance to experience the joy of ice sports. Additionally, the venue will collaborate with the Lotus Market to host a winter carnival.

Yang Qian, deputy manager of Sanhai Investment Company under Beijing Jicheng Landscape Group, which operates the Shichahai Ice Rink, explained that natural ice rinks require a minimum ice thickness of 15 cm and sustained temperatures between -8°C and 1°C for at least a week before opening. "Despite recent cold spells, the ice hasn’t yet reached the required thickness. Once it does, multiple inspections will ensure safety before the official opening. We urge the public to wait patiently and avoid unsafe, unofficial ice surfaces," Yang said.

While awaiting the optimal ice conditions, the rink has been preparing for the upcoming season. This year, the Shichahai Ice Rink will maintain its usual operating area of approximately 160,000 square meters across its front and rear sections. To accommodate more beginners, the training zone will be expanded, with new programs in ice hockey, speed skating, and figure skating. "We’re also incorporating traditional ice-themed activities to make lessons more engaging," Yang noted. The training area, located near the rear lake’s Duck Island, offers thicker ice for added safety.

As the New Year and Spring Festival approach, the rink will partner with the Lotus Market’s holiday bazaar for a "Winter Carnival." Visitors can enjoy market stalls, snacks, and photo opportunities while watching ice performances. Special promotions, including free ice rink tickets for purchases at participating vendors, will also be available.

"This year’s carnival will feature zodiac-themed cultural elements, upgraded ice carts, and interactive performances," Yang added. New smart systems will provide navigation and personalized services for visitors.

For details, the public can check the official "Shichahai Culture & Tourism" account or the "Lotus Market" mini-program.

**Safety Reminder** With thin ice posing significant risks, authorities warn against venturing onto unapproved frozen surfaces. Chaoyang Park has cautioned that its lakes remain unsafe due to inconsistent ice thickness, hidden weak spots, and difficult rescue conditions in case of accidents. Officials advise sticking to authorized rinks, avoiding solo outings, and staying alert for signs of unstable ice, such as cracking or discoloration. If unsafe behavior is observed, visitors should report it to park staff immediately.
