Henan Province, known for its agricultural heritage, rich culture, and large population, offers much more than traditional impressions suggest. The region is now gaining attention for its innovative tourism, consumer trends, advanced manufacturing, and emerging industries.
In the realm of new tourism, Henan has developed immersive experiences reminiscent of a Chinese-style Disneyland. Kaifeng’s Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden and Wansui Mountain Martial Arts City feature daily live performances with real horses, artillery, and interactive NPCs, creating a vibrant atmosphere that resonates with visitors. The area’s emphasis on Song Dynasty aesthetics and Tang Dynasty nostalgia, combined with Luoyang’s peony blossoms and Hanfu culture, enhances its appeal as a cultural destination.
On the consumer front, Henan stands out with unique retail experiences. Proud East, a supermarket chain based in Xuchang, has gained a reputation as a top-tier retail destination, often described as a "6A-level scenic spot without an off-season." Its influence has inspired similar stores across the province, elevating the shopping experience for locals and tourists alike. Additionally, Henan is a major producer of lab-grown diamonds, offering high-quality, affordable alternatives to natural stones. With production hubs in Zhengzhou, Nanyang, Xuchang, and Shangqiu, the region supplies a significant portion of the global market, making diamond ownership more accessible.
The beverage brand Mixue Ice City, originating from Zhengzhou, has expanded globally with its affordable offerings, such as ¥2 ice cream and ¥4 lemonade. With plans to reach 60,000 stores worldwide by the end of 2025, the brand has established a presence in 13 countries, including South Korea, Japan, and the United States.
Henan is also a hub for advanced manufacturing. The province produces heavy machinery, including tunnel-boring machines known as "engineering kings," which are exported to over 30 countries. Luoyang, a key player in bearing manufacturing, supports China’s industrial sector with high-precision components used in wind turbines and robotics. Changyuan, dubbed the "Crane Machinery Capital," exports lifting equipment to more than 170 countries and is home to prominent companies like Weihua and Xinke. One local crane manufacturer has gained online fame for its generous employee benefits, earning the nickname "the internet’s favorite money-giving boss."
In the digital sphere, Zhengzhou has emerged as a center for short-form video dramas, often called the "Vertical Studio" of China. These productions, featuring themes like family sagas and adventure stories, have revitalized old factories and commercial spaces, providing opportunities for local residents to participate in filming. The city is now aiming to become the "Short Drama Capital."
With its blend of ancient heritage and modern innovation, Henan continues to attract attention and admiration, proving itself as a dynamic and forward-thinking region.
