Kweichow Moutai's Typo: "昴" Missing a Stroke, Becomes "昂"

On the evening of January 21, the official WeChat account "Xiaomao i Moutai" published a statement acknowledging that it had recently received a letter pointing out an error. The letter indicated that on the side packaging box of the 53% vol 500ml Kweichow Moutai Co.,Ltd. (Bingwu Horse Year) Classic Edition, the character for the lunar mansion "昴" from the Twenty-Eight Mansions was incorrectly printed as "昂". Upon verification, it was confirmed that a single stroke (丿) was indeed missing, transforming the character from "昴" into "昂".

It was noted that recently, a netizen posted on social media pointing out a printing error in the star chart printed on the external packaging of the Horse Year Moutai. The character "昴" from "昴宿" (The Hairy Head mansion) was mistakenly printed as the visually similar character "昂". Consumers who had already purchased the Horse Year Moutai verified this and stated that their product boxes all contained the same character usage mistake.

Regarding Kweichow Moutai's error of writing "昴" as "昂" by missing a stroke, some netizens used the opportunity to criticize: "For i Moutai to make such a basic mistake is not just a problem of one character, but reflects Kweichow Moutai Company's short-sightedness and eagerness for quick success." Other netizens joked: "Misprinted stamps were common in the past and often indicated potential for appreciation," "This is probably for anti-counterfeiting purposes," "Could it be intentional?", "It's a marketing gimmick," "It has increased in value," and so on.

Reportedly, the 53% vol 500ml Kweichow Moutai Co.,Ltd. (Bingwu Horse Year) Classic Edition uses "Star Guardian, Dragon-Horse Spirit" as its core creative concept. It deeply integrates the Four Symbols of the Chinese traditional astrological system (Azure Dragon of the East, Vermilion Bird of the South, White Tiger of the West, Black Tortoise of the North) with the Twenty-Eight Mansions system and the Horse Year zodiac culture. This not only continues the cultural and collectible attributes of Moutai's zodiac wines but also cleverly showcases the Eastern cosmic view of "Harmony between Heaven and Man" through astrological totems.
