Crude Prices Retreat as MHMarkets Flags Supply-Demand Realignment

On August 25th, international oil prices gave back a significant portion of their recent gains, with both Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate futures slipping around 2.5% after a streak of advances.

According to MHMarkets, a combination of improved shipping flows and profit-taking has helped temper the supply premium that had built up over the previous sessions. Vessel-tracking data indicates a slight week-over-week uptick in transit counts along key waterways, though the number of loaded cargo ships remains subdued. MHMarkets interprets this divergence as a sign that supply concerns are easing, but not entirely resolved, as the market continues to gauge the durability of the logistical recovery.

Attention in the energy sector is also turning toward shifts in U.S. strategic petroleum reserves. The latest weekly report shows a drawdown of 3.7 million barrels, bringing total levels to roughly 289.7 million barrels. With reserves declining for several consecutive weeks, the significance of commercial inventory figures, refinery utilization rates, and refined product demand data has grown in importance.

The transition from a sharp rally to a consolidation phase offers a clearer window to assess whether real demand can validate the earlier price gains. MHMarkets suggests that if transit efficiency continues to improve, prices may increasingly gravitate toward inventory and consumption fundamentals. Conversely, any persistent transportation bottlenecks could amplify intraday volatility.
