Stock News12:12

Super Micro Computer (SMCI.US) reported its fiscal fourth-quarter results for the 2026 fiscal year after the market close on August 11, with shares surging over 10% in after-hours trading. Revenue reached $11.1 billion, a staggering 93% year-over-year increase, while non-GAAP gross margin hit 17.6%, far exceeding the guidance range of 8.2%–8.4%. Non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.70 also significantly beat expectations.

The company disclosed that new orders during the quarter exceeded $60 billion, pushing its backlog to a record high. It provided a robust outlook for fiscal 2027, forecasting revenue between $65 billion and $72 billion, with first-quarter revenue expected to be between $14.5 billion and $15.5 billion. Management stated that it will leverage its Data Center Building Block Solutions (DCBBS) to deepen enterprise customer expansion, optimize product mix and operational efficiency, and continue to enhance profitability amid rapid growth, solidifying its position as a leading one-stop AI infrastructure provider. Below is a summary of the key takeaways from the earnings call.

Key Financial Highlights & Outlook

For the fourth quarter, Super Micro Computer reported non-GAAP gross margin of 17.6%, a massive improvement from the 10.1% reported in the third quarter. This beat was driven by a better-than-expected customer and product mix, which contributed approximately 75% of the margin improvement, with lower tariff costs and reduced inventory provisions accounting for the remaining 25%. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 14.3% from 7.2% in the prior quarter. The company ended the quarter with $7.5 billion in cash and equivalents. Looking ahead, management guided for first-quarter fiscal 2027 gross margin to be between 10.4% and 10.8%, reflecting a more normalized mix. The company expects non-GAAP EPS of $1.01 to $1.10 on revenue of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion.

Business Momentum and Customer Diversification

CEO Charles Liang highlighted that fiscal 2026 was a historic milestone, with revenue nearly doubling year-over-year to $39 billion. He noted that demand for AI/IT solutions is stronger than ever, driven by the company's transformation into a comprehensive DCBBS provider. A key metric was the record backlog entering fiscal 2027, fueled by over $60 billion in new orders during the quarter. Liang attributed some customer delays in the fourth quarter to power shortages, cooling, and networking issues, but emphasized these are purely timing-related. The company is seeing robust demand from both large data centers and a rapidly expanding base of enterprise customers. Enterprise and channel revenue hit $5.6 billion in the quarter, representing 50% of total revenue and growing 98% sequentially. The customer base is also diversifying, with nine customers each contributing over $1 billion in revenue for fiscal 2026, compared to four in the prior year.

Strategy for Profitability and Product Roadmap

Management emphasized a strategic focus on balancing revenue growth with profitability. While high-volume GPU sales are typically lower-margin, the company is actively growing its higher-margin CPU, storage, and enterprise businesses. The DCBBS platform, which integrates GPU and CPU servers, storage, liquid cooling, and management software, is maturing and expected to contribute significantly to net profit. On the product roadmap, Super Micro is ramping shipments for NVIDIA’s GB300, HGX B300, and B200 NVL4 platforms, while preparing for the Vera Rubin lineup. It is also seeing strong momentum with AMD’s Helios and MI450 solutions and Intel’s Xeon 6+ platforms. The company is investing in its sales force to better capture enterprise opportunities and is focusing on operational discipline, including factory automation and inventory management, to smooth out gross margin volatility.

Liquidity and Capital Management

CFO David Weigand noted that following a $5.6 billion financing in June, the balance sheet is fully supportive of business needs. The company currently has no plans to use its ATM program. Looking ahead, the company expects its cash conversion cycle to improve as it benefits from tighter contract terms within its backlog. Management believes that the current cash flow profile is sufficient to support the $65–$72 billion revenue target, but additional financing may be considered if revenue opportunities exceed $80 billion.
