U.S. Energy Secretary Mandates Continued Operation of Two Indiana Coal Plants to Ensure Midwest Power Supply

Deep News03-24

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright issued an emergency order on Monday requiring two coal-fired power plants in Indiana to continue operating, ensuring the Midwest region maintains access to affordable, reliable, and secure electricity.

The order directs North Indiana Public Service Company's CenterPoint Energy and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator to take all necessary measures to ensure designated generating units at the relevant coal plants are available for power generation at all times.

Certain generating units at these two coal plants were originally scheduled for shutdown by the end of 2025. The order emphasizes prioritizing the reduction of electricity costs while minimizing the risk of power outages and associated expenses.

The directive is effective from March 24 and will remain in force until June 21.
