Oil prices advanced during early Asian trading as tensions between the United States and Iran escalated, raising concerns over potential disruptions to Middle Eastern supplies. The increase follows threats from US President Donald Trump to target Iranian infrastructure if Iran attacks vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint for approximately one-fifth of global oil shipments.
In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, President Trump stated that for every instance Iran fires upon a ship in the strait, the US would "bomb and destroy a bridge or power plant," including infrastructure in or near Tehran.
The front-month West Texas Intermediate crude futures contract rose by 1.1% to reach $87.82 per barrel.
