Ningbo City College Student Transforms from "Slightly Overweight" to Long-Distance Runner Through Campus Running Program

Deep News11-13

A student from Ningbo City College of Vocational Technology in Zhejiang Province, Fu Binwen from Class B of the 23rd Wealth Management program, recently broke the men's 3000-meter long-distance running record at the Ningbo University Games with a time of 9 minutes and 13.63 seconds. Just two years ago, Fu was a "slightly overweight" young man who would get out of breath even while walking. His transformation into a long-distance running enthusiast came after participating in the college's campus running initiative.

According to a survey conducted by the college's Basic Course Teaching Department, among freshmen enrolled from 2021 to 2023, 20.3%, 19.5%, and 26.8% respectively had a Badger Meter (BMI) in the overweight (24-27.9) or obese (above 28) range.

To address this, the college implemented the "Integrated First and Second Classroom Physical Health Curriculum Plan," which includes an eight-hour (four-hour for two-year program students) second classroom component featuring campus running, sports competitions, and volunteer sports activities. Completion of these activities contributes to students' physical health course grades.

The campus running program is integrated into the physical education curriculum, with sessions held for an hour and a half each morning before classes and another hour and a half in the afternoon after classes. Faculty and physical education teachers organize and guide students on the track, combining the running program with ideological education to create the "Youth Cool Run" brand. Weekly rankings are published, showcasing the top 10 runners at the college level and the top 100 at the departmental level, encouraging students to shift from personal persistence to striving for collective honor.

"Improving students' physical fitness is the primary goal of our sports programs," said Zhou Guoming, the college's Party Secretary. The institution remains committed to monitoring students' health and academic performance, aiming to eliminate "zero runs" and increase participation rates while reducing "failures" and boosting excellence rates.

Young students have actively embraced the campus running initiative, demonstrating its success in fostering healthier lifestyles.
