HSBC (HK:5) Announces Group Chair Succession

On 3 December 2025, HSBC Holdings plc (“HSBC”) confirmed the appointment of Brendan Robert Nelson as Group Chair. Nelson joined the Board in September 2023 and has been serving as interim Group Chair since 1 October 2025.

Nelson has a longstanding background in financial services, gained through his leadership roles at KPMG’s Global Financial Services Practice and directorships at BP, RBS, and HSBC. The decision to appoint him as Group Chair followed a thorough review of both internal and external candidates.

According to the official announcement, Nelson will remain as Chairman of the Group Audit Committee until the publication of the 2025 results in February 2026. HSBC has indicated that further details on the succession for this role will be provided in due course.

Brendan Nelson’s confirmation as Group Chair comes amid the company’s continuing focus on delivering its strategic and financial objectives. HSBC, headquartered in London, serves customers worldwide and reported US$3,234bn in assets as of 30 September 2025.
