CATL Unveils World's First Proven Sodium-Ion Battery Energy Storage Station Solution

Deep News06-23 14:33

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.,Ltd. (CATL) has launched the world's inaugural station-level sodium-ion battery energy storage solution, introducing a proven system named Tianheng Sodium Battery.

The announcement was made at the Tianheng 2026 Global Launch Event in Munich, Germany, on June 22. The company declared that both the sodium battery energy storage solution and its supply chain have reached commercial readiness, with mass deliveries set to commence imminently.

Wu Dianfeng, Chief Technology Officer of CATL's Energy Storage Business Unit and Director of the Energy Storage Technology Center, highlighted the advantages of sodium resources, stating they are globally abundant, have a wide operating temperature range, and long lifespan, forming a dual cornerstone with lithium for the next generation of energy storage systems.

Xu Jinmei, Chief Technology Officer of CATL's Energy Storage Business Unit and President of its European Energy Storage Business, emphasized that the Tianheng Sodium Battery system is designed to deliver visible certainty to energy storage investors.

Reportedly, the Tianheng system is the world's first proven sodium-ion battery energy storage solution. A single unit can achieve a maximum energy capacity exceeding 30 MWh.

The entire station platform is specifically designed and developed for the sodium battery system. To match the voltage characteristics of sodium-ion batteries, CATL has developed a proprietary Bi-DC bidirectional voltage control system compatible with Power Conversion Systems (PCS), ensuring the PCS consistently operates under optimal conditions.

Furthermore, CATL has designed a dedicated Battery Management System (BMS) for the sodium-ion energy storage system and innovatively introduced a millisecond-level self-healing system. The complete solution can locate and isolate faults within 200 milliseconds and automatically restore power to non-faulty areas within 150 milliseconds, compressing fault resolution from the industry-standard "several weeks" down to just 350 milliseconds.

CATL indicated that the Chinese market will see the first official deliveries of its sodium battery energy storage systems to customers in September this year, with an annual shipment target of 1 GWh by the end of 2026. Global market deliveries are scheduled to begin in June next year.

This development signifies that the sodium-ion battery industry is formally entering a new phase of GWh-scale mass application.
