Market Monitor: Food and Industrial Commodity Prices Remain Broadly Stable from May 25-31

Data from commercial monitoring systems indicates that from May 25 to May 31, the average market prices for edible agricultural products and production materials in China remained largely unchanged compared to the previous week.

Edible Agricultural Products Market

Wholesale prices for poultry products saw a slight increase, with eggs and dressed chicken rising by 3.8% and 0.7%, respectively. Wholesale prices for aquatic products edged up slightly; large yellow croaker, large hairtail, and crucian carp increased by 0.8%, 0.6%, and 0.6%. Grain and oil wholesale prices were stable with minor increases; peanut oil, rapeseed oil, and rice were essentially flat, while wheat flour and soybean oil rose by 0.2% and 0.1%. Meat wholesale prices experienced slight fluctuations; pork averaged 16.04 yuan per kilogram, down 0.7%, mutton was essentially unchanged, and beef rose by 0.3%. The average wholesale price for six types of fruits declined slightly; watermelon, grapes, and apples fell by 3.0%, 1.0%, and 0.3%, respectively. The average wholesale price for 30 types of vegetables was 4.13 yuan per kilogram, down 0.5%, with chili peppers, tomatoes, and cauliflower dropping by 8.0%, 5.9%, and 5.0%.

Production Materials Market

Rubber prices registered a small decline, with synthetic rubber and natural rubber falling by 2.8% and 0.1%, respectively. Non-ferrous metal prices declined overall; copper, aluminum, and zinc dropped by 1.1%, 0.6%, and 0.6%. Steel prices continued to fall; rebar, hot-rolled strip steel, and high-speed wire rod were priced at 3,404 yuan, 3,524 yuan, and 3,613 yuan per ton, down 0.4%, 0.4%, and 0.3%, respectively. Fertilizer prices were largely stable; urea was essentially unchanged, while compound fertilizer fell by 0.1%. Basic chemical raw material prices showed minor fluctuations; soda ash, methanol, and polypropylene decreased by 1.5%, 0.3%, and 0.1%, respectively, while sulfuric acid rose by 0.9%. Wholesale prices for refined oil products increased slightly; #0 diesel, #92 gasoline, and #95 gasoline all rose by 0.1%. Coal prices were stable with some increases; anthracite coal was 1,133 yuan per ton, essentially unchanged, while coking coal and thermal coal were 1,184 yuan and 798 yuan per ton, rising by 1.6% and 0.5%, respectively.
