Apple's iOS 27 Shifts AI Focus from Chatbot Hype to Seamless Daily Integration

While the complete AI overhaul of Siri grabbed headlines at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, the company's broader artificial intelligence strategy is taking shape through a suite of subtle features embedded across its software ecosystem.

Instead of requiring users to adapt to a new AI-powered Siri to access benefits, Apple is integrating AI into the applications and services people already use, focusing on solving real-world problems.

The result is an iPhone that can help split a restaurant bill, protect passwords after a data breach, automate tasks, and organize information with less manual effort.

Individually, these features may seem less flashy than a Siri that finally understands context and acts on a user's behalf.

Collectively, however, they present a vision for AI that is less about conversing with a chatbot and more about making Apple's software itself feel smarter and more capable.

Beyond the Siri AI, here are the subtle AI features in iOS 27 that are most anticipated, currently available in a developer beta and soon for public testing before a full public release this fall.

Bill Splitting

When iOS 27 launches, users will be able to split restaurant bills using Apple Cash.

Powered by Apple Intelligence, taking or uploading a photo of a receipt will reveal a new option to split the bill with others.

The AI will automatically extract key details like items, quantities, tip, and total.

Users can select their own items from the receipt and share the request in a group chat for others to do the same.

The feature feels unintrusive, appearing only when needed and working seamlessly with familiar apps like Messages and Apple Cash.

It is also smart enough to calculate and request each person's share of tax and tip alongside the item prices.

Password Updates

A new password update feature will now use AI to act on the user's behalf by identifying weak or compromised passwords, such as those found in data breaches.

Rather than requiring manual updates, the feature can securely navigate to websites, log in, and upgrade a user's password to a new, more secure version automatically.

One-Tap Suggestions in Messages

For those who loved the feature that automatically surfaces SMS verification codes above the keyboard, the new one-tap suggestions in Messages for iOS 27 will be a favorite.

Using Apple Intelligence, the Messages app will offer various one-tap suggestions based on the topic of a conversation.

Again, the feature presents itself as a useful tool within the chat, not as an obvious AI add-on.

Call Background Info

Another subtle option in iOS 27 aims to reduce the stress of calling customer service by displaying necessary information the user might need to provide to the representative.

For example, if calling about a flight booking, the Call Background Info feature will show the confirmation code directly on the call screen.

This tool uses Apple Intelligence to extract information from emails in the Mail app and runs entirely on-device for privacy.

Critically, it operates in the background without requiring conversation with an AI assistant; the necessary details simply appear.

Adding Calendar Events

Apple is now enabling users to add or modify calendar events using just a natural language description, replicating a capability long offered by third-party apps like Fantastical.

Underneath, Apple Intelligence extracts contacts and locations and creates a title for the event on the user's behalf.

This makes adding items to the Apple Calendar easier, removing the need to think about which field requires which information.

Vibe Coding Shortcuts

The powerful Shortcuts app has often been intimidating due to its technical barrier to entry, allowing users to script tasks and create automations.

For non-power users, it could be a frustrating experience, requiring online tutorials or resources like the Shortcuts Gallery.

In iOS 27, users can simply describe what they want their iPhone to do.

Shortcuts can also handle other routine tasks, like automatically texting a partner an estimated time of arrival when leaving work or turning on a porch light when a DoorDash order is delivered.

Reducing Home App Notification Clutter

Smart home users are familiar with being flooded by multiple unimportant notifications for the same event.

With Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, the Home app can understand multiple actions and their relationships, sending a single, relevant notification for the overall activity.

The AI can also search for specific video clips of events like package deliveries and will highlight noteworthy clips at the top of the screen for review.

Safari Tab Organization

Another understated AI feature is the tab organizer in the Safari web browser.

Using Apple Intelligence, Safari can now understand the content being viewed on websites and organize tabs into related topics.

For example, if multiple tabs are open for planning a trip, Safari can group them all into a Travel tab group.

These groups appear above the webpage at the top of the browser for easy access when resuming research.

Apple notes that the AI performing this work respects user privacy, as it does not share browsing data with anyone, including Apple.
