Stock Track08-04 21:53

NRG Energy Inc (NRG) shares plummeted 5.26% during intraday trading on Tuesday, following the release of the company's second-quarter earnings report that fell short of analyst expectations.

The power producer posted adjusted earnings of $1.49 per share, missing the consensus estimate of $1.69 per share. The earnings miss was primarily driven by higher interest expenses and increased depreciation and amortization costs related to the acquisition of assets from LS Power. Interest expenses widened to $310 million from $148 million a year earlier, while the Texas segment's adjusted core profit declined 25.6% due to higher supply costs and mild weather.

Despite the profit miss, the company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 financial guidance and highlighted positive developments, including a new hyperscaler data center project in Texas with significant expansion potential. However, the weaker-than-expected quarterly results overshadowed the outlook, triggering the sell-off.
