On April 3, the PetroChina Research Institute of Exploration and Development successfully developed an AI agent for oil and gas reservoir simulation, based on its independently developed HiSim industrial software. This breakthrough establishes a fully automated technical pathway from natural language requirements to simulation results. The agent can accurately interpret user intent, generate simulation files through dialogue, and autonomously invoke tools to simulate reservoir flow and development dynamics. Traditional numerical simulation of oil and gas reservoirs, a core technology in exploration and development, has long faced challenges such as complex operations and error-prone parameter configuration. With this AI agent, researchers need only describe their requirements to automatically complete a full set of simulation analyses, freeing personnel from repetitive tasks while significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of development decisions. The agent has already passed technical verification and formed a complete technical solution, laying a solid foundation for subsequent industrial adaptation and application. Project leaders indicated that future efforts will focus on optimizing the agent’s collaborative mechanisms and support capabilities, promoting the shift of more industrial software toward intelligence and efficiency. This initiative aims to enhance overall research productivity and quality, supporting the digital transformation of oil and gas exploration and development.
