WuXi AppTec's third-quarter report continues to deliver stunning results! Revenue for the first three quarters has already surpassed the full year of last year, Q3 single-quarter net profit attributable to shareholders hit a record high, the full-year revenue guidance was raised for the second time, and orders on hand reached 76.7 billion yuan. However, the strong post-earnings rally did not repeat itself. On the first trading day after the earnings release (October 27), WuXi AppTec (ASX: 02359) A-shares and Hong Kong shares closed down 3.1% and 1.43% respectively. During the previous interim report season, its explosive results drove both A-share and H-share prices to record highs. With the third-quarter report equally strong, why has the catalyst failed to work this time?
Breaking down the Q3 report: how high is the real gold content?
Let's first look at WuXi AppTec's third-quarter data: revenue for the first three quarters was 45.537 billion yuan, up 38.59% year-on-year; net profit attributable to shareholders was 19.398 billion yuan, up 60.64% year-on-year. In the third quarter alone, revenue was 16.640 billion yuan, and net profit attributable to shareholders was 8.318 billion yuan, up 136.67% year-on-year. What do these figures mean? In four words: the best in history! First-three-quarter revenue has already exceeded the full year of last year, and together with net profit attributable to shareholders, it set the highest record for a three-quarter report in history. Single-quarter revenue and net profit also refreshed historical highs for the same period.
Orders and guidance are the hardest part of this financial report. As of the end of the third quarter, WuXi AppTec's orders on hand reached 76.74 billion yuan, up 36.4% year-on-year. As a leading indicator for CXO companies, the fuller the orders on hand, the higher the visibility of future revenue. It is precisely based on strong orders and delivery performance that WuXi AppTec raised its full-year guidance for the second time in the third-quarter report: overall revenue for 2026 is expected to be raised from 58.5-60.5 billion yuan to 61.0-61.9 billion yuan.
Record-breaking results, yet the stock price fell
Strong results, but the stock price fell instead of rising. What is going on? Breaking it down, there may be three reasons.
First, market sentiment disturbances. Recently, A-share and H-share markets have been volatile, and today they fell into deep adjustment again. Pharmaceuticals and healthcare moved lower with the market. The CSI Medical Index and the Hong Kong Stock Connect Healthcare Thematic Index, which have relatively high CXO exposure, closed down 3.44% and 1.35% respectively. At present, the CXO sector may be in an adjustment period after capital diversion from the AI4S theme.
Second, external uncertainty. Under the U.S. Biosecure Act, the OMB is expected to release the BCC list by the end of 2026. Although the company has obtained a preliminary court injunction blocking the automatic inclusion path, there is still the possibility of separate inter-agency designation. WuXi AppTec management said at the earnings meeting that it has not received any notice, but before the outcome is finalized, funds naturally tend to reduce positions first.
Third, a discount on the profit side. From the results themselves, about 2.4 billion yuan of WuXi AppTec's Q3 net profit attributable to shareholders came from non-recurring gains from the sale of part of its equity in WuXi XDC. Therefore, the nominal growth rate of 136.67% contains a one-off factor, and the real operating growth rate is around 50%. Although still strong, the expectation gap will be somewhat discounted.
Looking at the CXO sector through WuXi AppTec: is the allocation window opening?
As the absolute leader in the CXO industry, WuXi AppTec's financial report is an important window for observing the prosperity of the entire innovative drug chain. Led by the leader, listed companies in the industry continue to verify: Asymchem's third-quarter report disclosed that newly signed orders maintained double-digit year-on-year growth, and full-year revenue growth is expected to be 19%-22%; Porton Pharma Solutions expects revenue growth in the fourth quarter of 2026 to increase to 20%-30%.
Zheshang Securities' latest view stated that with strong leader performance and order growth, it is bullish on the CXO sector's third-quarter report exceeding expectations and 2027 being a big year for performance. It recommends focusing on the continuation of the high-growth trend in the fundamentals of external-demand CDMO leaders, as well as the transformation of internal-demand CRO from orders to earnings elasticity.
Regarding secondary market strategy, Zhongtai Securities recommends downplaying short-term sentiment disturbances and grasping allocation opportunities after adjustment in CXO leaders with high visibility in order growth, delivery pace, and profit improvement.
