In a landmark development for the banking sector, HSBC Holdings PLC and Standard Chartered PLC have jointly announced the successful completion of the first interbank cross-border interoperability transaction involving tokenised deposits, executed through SWIFT's blockchain ledger.
This transaction, which took place on August 19, marks the world's first live interbank trade on the SWIFT ledger since the network declared its blockchain infrastructure operational in July. The two banking giants exchanged payment messages via the SWIFT ledger, with the resulting payment obligations recorded respectively on HSBC's tokenised deposit service system and Standard Chartered's proprietary tokenised deposit infrastructure.
In this setup, the SWIFT blockchain ledger acts as a "secure orchestration layer," matching and netting the obligations between the two banks' tokenised deposit systems before final settlement is completed through existing channels. In essence, the funds remain anchored to regulated bank deposits, with the SWIFT ledger facilitating dialogue, reconciliation, and netting between two independent bank tokenisation frameworks, rather than creating a new settlement currency from scratch.
This approach reflects the core logic of traditional financial infrastructure embracing distributed ledger technology: enhancing cross-border payment efficiency through on-chain capabilities while staying within the regulated bank money framework. Lewis Sun, HSBC's Head of Digital Currencies, hailed the transaction as a "milestone moment" for the prospects of tokenised deposits, noting that it proves bank-issued digital currencies can achieve interoperability across different institutions while preserving the integrity and regulation of the existing financial ecosystem, addressing the real pain point for corporate clients: global liquidity management.
Meanwhile, Mark Willis, Standard Chartered's Head of Emerging Payments, Transaction Services, and Digital Assets, positioned tokenised deposits as a key pillar of the bank's digital asset strategy, aiming to build end-to-end solutions that enable clients to transact, settle, and manage tokenised liquidity across borders. He emphasised that as institutional demand for faster and more efficient fund mobilisation grows, interoperable tokenised deposits will play an increasingly vital role in corporate treasury management, operational efficiency, and real-time liquidity oversight.
In July, SWIFT announced that its blockchain ledger had completed initial construction and entered a "ready for use" phase, with 17 banks across six continents preparing to pilot live transactions. The core objective is to leverage tokenised deposits for round-the-clock cross-border payments and enhanced liquidity efficiency. As the central hub of the global interbank messaging network, SWIFT's decision to build its own blockchain ledger to orchestrate this process signifies its attempt to bridge the gap between legacy systems and the on-chain world, rather than being bypassed by the latter.
For the global cross-border payment ecosystem, "round-the-clock" capability stands as a critical requirement. Traditional cross-border payments rely on correspondent banking networks and batch cut-off times, often taking hours or even days for funds to arrive, with transactions nearly halting during weekends and holidays. Tokenised deposits, however, naturally support continuous movement; as long as two banks' on-chain ledgers can interoperate, cross-border fund transfers could theoretically become as simple as sending an instant message.
