US Strike on Iranian Tankers Boosts Oil, Puts Pressure on Bitcoin

A US military operation against Iranian oil vessels has driven crude prices higher while weighing on Bitcoin, as geopolitical tensions ripple through global markets. Oil prices climbed more than 1% after US Central Command confirmed strikes on three Iranian tankers, with the digital asset slipping nearly 1% to trade around the $79,700 mark. The targeted vessels were positioned near Kharg Island, Jask, and the Gulf of Oman, according to the military statement.

Admiral Brad Cooper of Central Command characterized the action as a direct response to recent Iranian attacks on American ships, aimed at ramping up economic pressure on Tehran. The command also provided updated data on its maritime blockade efforts since reinstating them on July 14, reporting the interception of 92 commercial vessels, the disabling of three, and onboard inspections of two others, signaling an escalating enforcement posture in the region.

In the wake of these developments, West Texas Intermediate crude futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose roughly 1% to $92.72 per barrel. September has already seen oil prices accumulate gains of over 6%, extending a recovery from around $70 in early July. Higher energy costs could intensify global inflationary pressures, making it more challenging for central banks, including the Federal Reserve, to reduce borrowing costs—a factor typically viewed as a headwind for liquidity-driven financial markets.

Turning to Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency slipped nearly 1% to approximately $79,700 as of midnight Beijing time on September 7, amid the heightened geopolitical backdrop. Over the weekend, the asset oscillated around the $80,000 threshold. Additionally, the Liquid Network, a settlement layer used by multiple exchanges, suffered a security breach on Sunday, resulting in losses of roughly $320 million.

On the macroeconomic front, stronger-than-expected US non-farm payroll data for August has reinforced market bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike. However, President Trump took to social media to advocate for lower interest rates, urging the Fed to act "in the national interest" and threatening trade measures if rates were raised. This conflicting pressure between the White House and robust employment figures puts Fed Chair Warsh in a difficult position. Analysts suggest that such uncertainty, rather than the rate hike itself, is more likely to dampen risk appetite across Bitcoin and the broader financial landscape.
