Significant Natural Gas Discovery Made by Eni Offshore Indonesia

Deep News04-20

Eni has made a significant natural gas discovery offshore Indonesia, estimated to hold approximately 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 300 million barrels of condensate.

The discovery was made by the Geng North-1 exploration well in the Ganal Block of the Kutei Basin, situated about 70 kilometers off the coast of East Kalimantan.

The well was drilled to a depth of around 5,100 meters in water depths of approximately 2,000 meters, encountering a gas column in a Miocene reservoir with favorable petrophysical properties. A drill stem test is planned to assess the reservoir's productivity.

This discovery adds to a series of finds in the basin, including the Geng North discovery in 2023 and the Konta-1 well announced in December 2025, highlighting the scale of the region's gas resources.

The find follows final investment decisions for the Gendalo and Gandang gas projects in the South Hub, as well as the Geng North and Gehem fields in the North Hub.

The North Hub project is expected to utilize a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit with a processing capacity of 1 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day and 90,000 barrels of condensate per day, leveraging the Bontang LNG plant.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the combined resources of the Geliga and nearby Gula discoveries could support additional production of 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day and 80,000 barrels of condensate per day, potentially establishing a third production hub in the Kutei Basin.

Eni stated it is evaluating development options that utilize existing and planned infrastructure to accelerate production and optimize costs.

The Geliga-1 discovery is located within the Ganal Production Sharing Contract block, where Eni holds an 82% operating interest and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation holds an 18% interest.

The block is part of the Searah asset portfolio, a joint venture announced by Eni and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) in November 2025, with completion expected in the second quarter of 2026.

Eni has been operating in Indonesia since 2001 and currently produces approximately 90,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from assets such as Jangkrik and Merakes.
