Cnooc Limited announced on December 24 the discovery of the Qinhuangdao 29-6 billion-ton oilfield in the shallow Neogene strata of the Bohai Sea.
According to disclosed information, the Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield is located in the central Bohai Sea, with its main oil-bearing layer in the lower section of the Neogene Minghuazhen Formation. The reservoir is shallow and contains medium-to-heavy crude oil. The discovery well encountered an oil layer of 66.7 meters, with a total drilling depth of 1,688 meters. Test production achieved a daily output of 2,560 barrels of crude oil.
Through continuous exploration, Cnooc Limited has confirmed proven geological reserves exceeding 100 million tons of oil equivalent in the Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield.
Xu Changgui, Chief Geologist of Cnooc Limited, stated that the company's enhanced research on hydrocarbon migration and accumulation models in shallow Neogene slope zones, along with technological innovation, led to this major discovery. This breakthrough challenges the traditional understanding that slope zones allow hydrocarbons to pass through without accumulation, demonstrating significant exploration potential in peripheral slope areas under strong extensional-strike-slip fault activity.
Additionally, the Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield marks the second billion-ton lithologic oilfield discovered in the mature exploration area of the Shijiutuo Uplift. This further highlights the value of refined exploration and strengthens the resource foundation for the company's reserves and production growth.
