Eurozone governments have been instructed to submit nominations for the successor to European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde by Friday.
According to a spokesperson for the Eurogroup, Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis has called on member states to present their proposals by November 6. The Eurogroup is composed of finance ministers from the 21 eurozone countries.
Eurozone finance ministers are scheduled to evaluate these nominations at their meeting on November 9. Currently, the candidates include Pablo Hernandez de Cos of Spain and Klaas Knot of the Netherlands.
Lagarde stated on Thursday that she will step down on February 7 next year, approximately nine months earlier than her originally scheduled term, in order to regain the freedom to speak on issues beyond monetary policy. She has previously expressed interest in participating in discussions during the French presidential election campaign later next year.
