Treasury yields dipped and the dollar gained.Signs of earnings pressure are complicating the picture for investors hopeful that the Fed will start moderating its policy tightening as inflation slows. Last year’s aggressive rate hikes are starting to have an effect on company performance: According to data compiled by Bloomberg, earnings per share estimates for the S&P 500 have fallen since peaking in June 2022, while revenue projections have flatlined.“There are some signs that the hiking cycle is beginning to have an impact, not least from the outlook of those companies which have reported so far this quarter,” said Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor. “Earnings guidance has been scrutinized for the immediate projections of the corporates on the ground and there has been a notable groundswell of cautious or even negative prospects as the pressure on growth intensifies.”In the euro area, gross domestic product edged up by 0.1% in the final quarter, Eurostat said Tuesday, defying economist estimates for a contraction of 0.1%. While German and Italian output shrank, France and Spain recorded expansion. There was also stronger-than-anticipated data on Monday from Ireland.Among individual stock movers in Europe on Tuesday, Swiss lender UBS Group AG dropped more than 3% afte rreporting a slump in revenue at its key wealth management business. Unicredit SpA surged after the Italian lenderreportedbetter-than-expected profit.In Asia, the selloff in Adani Group shares continued, with 10 of the conglomerate’s companies seeing about $75 billion in market value erased after US short-seller Hindenburg Research leveled fraud accusations last week. Benchmarks for China, Japan, India, South Korea and Australia all dropped.Samsung Electronics Co. fell more than 3.5% in Seoul, weighing on South Korea’s Kospi gauge, after profit slumped on poor demand for semiconductors and weakness in smartphones and memory chips. In Hong Kong, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s decline this week reached around 10% amid concern that China’s consumer recovery may fail to meet lofty expectations.Hanging over everything is Wednesday’s Fed decision, with the US central bank widely expected to raise rates by a quarter percentage point. Investors will be watching for the tone officials set for future meetings after Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s consistent efforts to push back against traders anticipating rate cuts later this year.The rally in stocks this month suggests the market has so far brushed off Powell’s warning of “higher-for-longer” interest rates.“On a short-term basis, the US’s main indices are buckling under the pressure of the Fed’s upcoming rate rise,” said Sophie Lund-Yates, lead equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. “As the decision draws closer, there are inevitability some small tremors creeping in, but these shouldn’t be protracted.”Elsewhere in markets, oil fell further after touching a three-week low on Monday.
