A new career pathway has emerged for automotive professionals in China, with Jiading District leading the charge by establishing a dedicated promotion system for smart vehicle technology.
For the first time in Shanghai, "Smart Vehicle Technology" has been recognized as an independent specialty within the professional title evaluation system, as announced in the June 25th notice regarding the 2026 intermediate-level professional title review for the mechanical, electrical, and smart vehicle technology sectors. This initiative provides a formal "professional identity" for compound talent skilled in areas like mechanics, electronics, software, algorithms, and electrical engineering. Professionals in the smart vehicle field, regardless of their work location in Shanghai, now have a dedicated evaluation channel for their expertise.
Within a month of the announcement, nearly 100 automotive professionals have applied. Among them is Xu Huarong, a technical manager at a NIO service center. "Compared to traditional fuel vehicles, the technologies in today's automotive industry are more intelligent and integrated. There was no such channel to apply and learn before, so I wanted to seize this opportunity," Xu said, noting his shift from a marketing background to a technical career path. "This new intermediate title offers a new option and brings new hope for technical personnel like me."
Creating a Comprehensive Evaluation System
Zhou Li, a section chief at the Jiading District Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, explained that smart vehicle technology is a highly cross-disciplinary and integrated systemic engineering field. The existing evaluation system struggled to holistically and scientifically assess a candidate's cross-disciplinary integration capabilities and full-chain systems thinking. The new intermediate title review channel aims to evaluate professionals based on their ability to solve complex problems using an integrated perspective, rather than breaking down their skills into outdated categories like mechanics, electronics, or software. Automotive professionals can now apply in six key areas: intelligent driving algorithms, in-vehicle chips, in-vehicle software, smart cockpits, smart charging piles and technology, and testing and validation. The system is expected to gradually expand to cover other core areas of the automotive industry.
An Industry in Transformation
The talent shift in new energy vehicles reflects a broader industry transformation. Jiading District, as the core hub for Shanghai's ambition to become a world-class automotive industry center, has already gathered over 600 intelligent connected vehicle companies. This creates a robust environment with abundant technical resources and active innovation. Currently, Jiading employs over 156,800 people in the automotive sector, including more than 90,000 automotive professionals. Across Shanghai, the total automotive workforce exceeds 500,000, with over 150,000 compound automotive professionals.
Structured Training and Career Ladder
Yu Wei, Vice President of the Shanghai Open University Jiading Campus, stated that the campus, with support from the university and the district government, has designed the continuing education curriculum for the application process. The curriculum covers five core modules, including in-vehicle software, smart cockpit technology, and intelligent driving and algorithms. Courses are taught by experienced industry experts to ensure professionalism and authority. Applicants must complete at least 50 hours of public courses and 40 hours of professional courses over the past three years. The "theory + practical assessment" model is designed to create a clear career development and promotion path for compound technical talent. The evaluation will be held annually, with the first session expected to cover approximately 300 professionals. This intermediate "Smart Vehicle Technology" certificate also serves as a solid stepping stone to a senior title, as the evaluation committee's smart vehicle technology specialty is aligned with the corresponding discipline groups of the SAIC Group's senior professional title review committee.
Looking Ahead
By 2026, China's automotive manufacturing sector is expected to undergo an unprecedented structural transformation, with the total talent demand projected to exceed 1.2 million. The core battlegrounds for talent will be new energy vehicles, intelligent driving, and in-vehicle software and electronic/electrical architecture, as the industry shifts from traditional manufacturing to a technology-driven new cycle. Wu Xian, an associate researcher at Tongji University's School of Automotive and Energy Engineering, believes that compound skilled talent in the new energy and intelligent connected fields is what the industry needs. By creating this exclusive application channel for intermediate-level "Smart Vehicle Technology" titles, Jiading District has filled a critical gap in the career advancement path for smart vehicle tech talent. This initiative can provide more practitioners with skill training and professional education, ultimately offering better talent support for the healthy development of the automotive industry.
