On June 16, Guangdong province convened a high-level symposium in Guangzhou to solicit opinions and suggestions from scientists and entrepreneurs on accelerating the development of the new-type mechatronics industry. This move clearly signals the province's intent to seize the new opportunities presented by the smart manufacturing revolution and cultivate a new trillion-yuan industrial cluster.
As a major economic province and a crucial global manufacturing hub, Guangdong has long relied on its manufacturing sector to underpin its economic stability. However, with increasing external competition and mounting pressures for industrial transformation, identifying a strategic breakthrough point is essential for maintaining economic scale and pursuing a high-quality development path. Against this backdrop, Guangdong's push into new-type mechatronics is evidently driven by well-considered strategic calculations.
In the new wave of global technological revolution, artificial intelligence, as a landmark technology, has become a key battleground determining future industrial competitiveness. Currently, global technological innovation is entering a period of intense activity, with major economies regarding AI as a core force shaping future development patterns. As a new industrial form, new-type mechatronics integrates advanced technologies such as mechanics, electronics, and artificial intelligence, representing a core track for reshaping manufacturing productivity. Securing a leading position in this field is both an inevitable choice for Guangdong to fulfill its mission of building a strong manufacturing province and a practical pathway to overcome industrial transformation bottlenecks and establish long-term competitive advantages.
In laying out the new-type mechatronics industry, Guangdong possesses foundational conditions for the integrated development of "AI + Mechatronics" and enjoys a unique triple advantage. Firstly, it has a solid, comprehensive manufacturing foundation. The province leads China in the number of industrial enterprises above a designated size and in industrial revenue. Its complete industrial chains for robotics, new energy equipment, and smart home appliances form a rare global industrial ecosystem.
Secondly, the province is a national leader in artificial intelligence technology. Its core AI industry scale has already exceeded 300 billion yuan, with continuous breakthroughs in frontier technologies like industrial large models, intelligent sensing, and embodied intelligence.
Thirdly, it boasts vast application scenarios. From smart manufacturing in factories to consumer smart equipment, commercial aerospace, and the industrial internet, the province's massive application scenarios provide fertile ground for the implementation, iteration, and large-scale validation of new technologies.
Thus, the deep coupling of manufacturing foundations, digital technology, and market scenarios gives Guangdong solid confidence in cultivating a trillion-yuan new-type mechatronics industrial cluster. As noted by Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Zhou Ji at the symposium, the next decade will present a historic opportunity for the intelligent upgrading and leapfrog development of China's and Guangdong's mechatronic equipment and product manufacturing industry.
By openly seeking advice and broadly gathering sound strategies at this meeting, Guangdong will collate and absorb the suggestions from participants to further refine and optimize its plans and measures. Simultaneously, the province has proposed policy measures to support the development of the new-type mechatronics industry from five aspects: tackling new technologies, building new business formats, shaping new market entities, expanding into new markets, and establishing new mechanisms. These measures aim to attract new technologies, products, and projects to incubate and take root in Guangdong, jointly exploring the new blue ocean of this industry.
This series of actions reflects Guangdong's pragmatic development approach of scientific decision-making and government-research-enterprise collaboration. A province that has always been at the forefront of reform and opening-up, Guangdong is calibrating its direction amidst change and making forward-looking layouts with a proactive stance. As early as the beginning of this year, the Guangdong Provincial Government Work Report explicitly stated: "Give full play to the advantages of mechatronics and hardware-software synergy, and consolidate the foundation, strengthen strengths, and enhance efficiency in areas such as chips, computing power, algorithms, data, and applications."
With determination, seizing opportunities, and persistent effort, Guangdong is poised to achieve new breakthroughs in this new industrial track. It can be foreseen that, leveraging its deep mechatronics industrial chain base, Guangdong will strive to build the "intelligent brain" for manufacturing, driving the industry's leap from automation to intelligence and autonomy. This will ensure the province maintains the initiative in development amid the new round of global smart manufacturing competition, continuing to write a glorious chapter in the reshaping of China's and even the world's industrial landscape.
