Li Daokui Proposes Lifting Motorcycle Restrictions to Resolve E-Bike Standards Controversy

Deep News12-14 10:00

Following the implementation of new national standards for electric bicycles, disputes have arisen. In response, Professor Li Daokui from Tsinghua University suggested lifting motorcycle bans and restrictions, advocating for returning choice to the public.

Li Daokui pointed out that the new standards cap e-bikes at 25 km/h, which "significantly reduces commuting speed and convenience for many consumers—an impractical requirement." He emphasized that long-standing motorcycle restrictions have created a mismatch in demand, forcing e-bikes to fulfill roles originally suited for motorcycles.

The remarks highlight growing tensions between regulatory frameworks and real-world mobility needs amid China's evolving transportation landscape.
