US equity futures edge lower and Treasuries gain after Democrats secure sweeping midterm victory

Investors are weighing how the midterm election outcome could shape Trump's policy approach.

US stock index futures slipped modestly while US government bonds strengthened after Democrats scored a decisive win in the American midterm elections.

When the first results came in, US equities fell sharply, but as the scale of the Democratic victory became clearer, the decline in index futures narrowed.

Nasdaq futures were last down 0.2%, recovering from an earlier steeper drop.

Panmure Liberum strategist Joachim Klement said investors are concerned that Democratic wins at both the federal and local levels could slow the pace of artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout.

Klement said: "The real worry is that a Democratic victory could slow data center construction and the development of the AI industry."

He noted, however, that while the election result was a shock, its impact on financial markets has not been especially severe.

S&P 500 futures fell 0.2%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures edged up 0.1%.

Asian stock indices were broadly higher. The Shanghai Composite rose 2.2%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index gained 1.45%.

US Treasuries moved in the opposite direction of Nasdaq futures, with yields rebounding after a sharp decline, though yields across maturities remained broadly lower.

The 10-year US Treasury yield was last down about 2.5 basis points at 4.935%; the 30-year yield hovered around 5.315%; and the 2-year yield slipped to 4.610%.

International oil prices edged higher. As a benchmark, January Brent crude futures rose 0.4% to about $104.10 a barrel.

In an interview, Trump acknowledged that the US-Iran conflict pushed up gasoline prices, which was partly why Democrats won a landslide in the midterms.

Investors are assessing how the midterm elections will affect Trump's policy strategy.

A Democratic-controlled Congress could limit the room for Trump to advance his foreign policy agenda.

The dollar weakened, and gold rebounded above $4,000 per troy ounce.

Bitcoin hovered below $78,000.

Today's market focus: investors will continue to watch final election results being released and pay close attention to statements from Democrats to understand their future policy priorities.

Beyond election-related developments, the US will also release several economic data points today, including the October ISM services index, the ADP October private-sector employment report, and September trade balance data.

On the corporate earnings front, companies including Qualcomm and McDonald's will report results.
