JetBlue Airways Opens Bookings for Its New Domestic First-Class Cabin BlueFirst

Deep News00:50

JetBlue Airways (JBLU) announced on Thursday that bookings are now open for its brand-new domestic first-class product, BlueFirst, across more than 30 routes.

The cabin is designed for domestic routes that are not equipped with the lie-flat Mint business class, which is mainly deployed on long-haul services.

This upgrade forms part of JetBlue Airways' fare structure overhaul, which includes a basic fare without free seat selection, a standard fare, and a refundable Flex fare offering greater flexibility for changes and cancellations.

Demand for roomier, higher-priced seats is strong, and JetBlue Airways hopes to expand its premium offerings to achieve consistent profitability — the backdrop against which the new first-class cabin is being introduced.

The first commercial flight featuring the BlueFirst cabin will operate on December 8 on the Boston–Fort Lauderdale route; service between Fort Lauderdale and New York's LaGuardia Airport will follow, with more routes to be added in the coming weeks and months.

JetBlue Airways is offering promotional fares for BlueFirst on select flights: $299 one-way between Boston and Fort Lauderdale, $249 one-way between New York and Fort Lauderdale, and $299 one-way between New York and Liberia, Costa Rica.

JetBlue Airways said the first-class seat reclines up to 5 inches and offers up to 7 inches more legroom than a standard main cabin seat.

Other perks include a seatback screen with Bluetooth connectivity, onboard meals and beverages, Group 1 priority boarding, and expedited security screening.

BlueFirst offers three fare tiers internally. BlueFirst Base: the lowest-priced tier, including one free checked bag, priority check-in and security, and Group 1 boarding; seat selection is free within 24 hours before departure, while changes and refunds incur a fee. BlueFirst (standard): includes two free checked bags and free seat selection, with no change or refund fees. BlueFirst Flex: includes all standard-tier benefits; cancellations before departure are fully refundable, and same-day changes and standby are supported at no extra charge.

JetBlue Airways CEO Joanna Geraghty said in a press release: "We created BlueFirst to offer a more accessible first-class experience. It retains the caring service JetBlue is widely known for while delivering outstanding value and comfort. We're delighted that travelers can now include BlueFirst in their travel plans."
