On March 27, it was announced that the main stadium of the second phase of the Guiyang Olympic Sports Center is approaching completion, with final-stage construction work progressing in an orderly manner. Located in the core area of Guanshanhu District, the main stadium spans a total floor area of 130,000 square meters and represents a total investment of 1.35 billion yuan. The project includes an 80,000-square-meter sports arena, a 10,000-square-meter training hall, 20,000 square meters of supporting facilities, 20,000 square meters of underground space, and outdoor environmental and ancillary engineering works.
Designed according to top-level standards for large-scale sports venues, the stadium features an octagonal-shaped spectator stand with a total seating capacity of 11,341, including 2,073 retractable seats. Unlike the first-phase “Bird’s Nest” stadium, the most distinctive feature of the new venue is its fully enclosed roof, resembling a massive egg. The main stadium is a multi-purpose competition venue, with a maximum field dimension of 71.8 meters by 41.2 meters when retractable stands are withdrawn.
With movable stands extended, the arena can host finals for basketball, volleyball, handball, badminton, and table tennis. When retracted, it accommodates preliminary rounds of badminton and table tennis, as well as gymnastics competitions with temporary staging. The stadium is also equipped with ice rink facilities suitable for ice hockey and speed skating events. A removable specialized sports wood floor allows quick conversion between ice and basketball surfaces, enabling the venue to host international competitions in the above disciplines.
Beyond sporting events, the facility will support public fitness activities, cultural performances, exhibitions, and other comprehensive sports services post-games. Currently, efforts are underway to attract business partnerships for venue operations, brand collaborations, and commercial supporting services.
