Trump Accounts Sold Strategy Stock Before an 83% Rally, Timing Draws Scrutiny

Stock News09-23 21:48

Freshly released federal ethics documents have revealed that President Donald Trump's multiple stock accounts sold shares of Strategy (MSTR.US) in late June and early July, only to repurchase the stock weeks later, right before its value surged by roughly 83%. The sell-then-buy pattern, detailed in filings made public on September 22, has triggered intense market interest in the timing of these trades.

As the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, Strategy (MSTR.US) tends to move in lockstep with the cryptocurrency market, and the account activity happened to coincide with a pivotal turning point in the stock's volatility cycle. A closer breakdown of the trades reveals a more complex flow of capital. The selling spree began in late June, with the accounts offloading Strategy (MSTR.US) shares on June 23 and 24, valued between $16,002 and $65,000. Notably, just two days later on June 26, the stock dipped to $81.81, marking its lowest point for the quarter.

Moving into July, the Office of Government Ethics report, which covered 1,156 transactions, showed that additional Strategy (MSTR.US) shares worth between $1,001 and $15,000 were sold on July 8. The buying phase then kicked in: on July 24, shares valued at $1,001 to $15,000 were purchased, with the stock closing that day at $91.67. This was followed by a larger acquisition on July 27, when the accounts bought shares worth between $50,001 and $100,000, closing at $98.65 that day.

Data indicates that from the substantial July 27 purchase, the share price climbed approximately 70%. Meanwhile, Quiver Quantitative, a firm that tracks political trading activity, calculated that from the July 24 entry point to the September 22 closing price of $167.33, the cumulative gain reached 83%. While the filings only list dollar ranges rather than exact share counts or per-share prices, the chronological sequence paints a clear picture of accumulation at relatively low levels.

The broader market backdrop and corporate behavior during this period add another layer of context. Throughout July, Strategy (MSTR.US) paused its Bitcoin purchases and sold off part of its holdings to raise capital, at a time when it possessed 843,775 BTC. Investor enthusiasm waned accordingly, with the company's own data showing average daily trading volume falling to $1.7 billion in July, the lowest level since 2026. However, as Bitcoin's price recovered to approximately $86,423 per coin, market liquidity improved markedly in September, with daily trading volume rebounding to $3.6 billion. As of September 21, Strategy (MSTR.US) had resumed buying Bitcoin and now holds 846,000 coins.

In response to external criticism, the Trump Organization has stated that these accounts are managed by outside firms. The organization was quoted as saying that "President Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization do not participate in the selection, direction, or approval of specific investments." Compared to the overall trading volume of $79 million to $270 million in those accounts for the month, Trump's buying and selling of Strategy (MSTR.US) shares was actually quite modest, yet this has not fully quelled public scrutiny.

The core of the political controversy centers on whether the trade timing involved insider information. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Representative Robert Garcia raised explicit concerns about the timing in an August letter. Although the Trump Organization emphasizes the independence of external management, lawmakers remain focused on the precise positioning ahead of the sharp price surge. The documents do not indicate whether these accounts still hold the shares, and the next report, covering August trading activity, may provide a more complete picture of position changes. As regulatory transparency continues to increase, financial activities of high-profile political figures are likely to face sustained examination from both the public and legislators.
