International gold prices have recently been caught in a tug-of-war around historic highs, with spot gold battling between bulls and bears near the $4,000 per ounce mark. Driven by overseas market spillover, domestic retail prices for pure gold remain stubbornly elevated. Amid these price swings, what new trends are emerging in China's gold consumption market?
At a branded gold store in urban Beijing, foot traffic in front of the counters was not particularly crowded. "With gold prices this high, people are clearly more cautious about spending," a store employee said. Previously, customers preferred heavy gold bangles, but now small pendants under 5 grams and braided gold jewelry are selling better. A local resident surnamed Chen, who was browsing jewelry, felt this shift deeply. She had originally planned to buy a solid bracelet, but after weighing the gold price, she ultimately chose a small gold peace buckle. "Gold can be worn and also holds value. Right now gold isn't cheap, so buying a small piece to treat myself is nice without too much financial pressure. When choosing, I also compare several stores and no longer make impulsive purchases," she said.
The Shuibei jewelry business district in Shenzhen is a major domestic hub for gold and jewelry wholesale and retail, with densely packed stalls attracting both tourists and locals looking for deals. "Wedding demand remains the main driver, and traditional items like plain gold bangles and longevity locks sell steadily," said a stall owner in Shuibei. Younger customers prefer lightweight, simply designed hard gold jewelry. "Compared to branded stores, the labor fees here are more cost-effective and there are more styles. Taking advantage of the recent slight dip in gold prices, I'm picking out a longevity lock for my child and getting a plain ring for myself," said Shenzhen resident surnamed Zhou, who came shopping on the weekend.
The World Gold Council recently released its "2026 China Gold Jewelry Retail Market Insights," confirming this trend. The report shows that under high gold prices, domestic gold jewelry consumption in physical tonnage has declined, but total consumption value remains resilient, displaying a "volume down, value up" pattern. On one hand, rigid demand from weddings and festivals remains a solid foundation, while self-pampering consumption aimed at personal wear has risen to become the primary driving force. On the other hand, hard gold jewelry is lightweight, stylish, and versatile, perfectly meeting young people's needs for daily wear and personal expression.
Behind the market's ups and downs is an upgrade in residents' consumption concepts. Industry insiders analyze that in the past, gold consumption was mainly focused on large wedding items, but now consumption scenarios are continuously expanding, with younger groups treating gold as a daily fashion accessory. Facing new demand, major gold brands are proactively adjusting their product structures, concentrating on launching small-weight, high-appeal lightweight gold jewelry to align with the new trend of rational consumption.
While jewelry consumption trends toward lighter weight, interest in gold asset allocation is also heating up. Affected by multiple factors including geopolitical conflicts, global rate cut expectations, and declining overseas bond yields, market risk aversion has risen, and gold investment demand has grown against the trend. Several banks have recently launched gold accumulation promotions, attracting ordinary investors through reduced fees and per-gram discounts. "Storing physical gold bars is cumbersome, but gold accumulation allows small,分批 investments to slowly build up gold assets," said a bank customer surnamed Li.
"The core value of gold lies in long-term preservation and risk hedging, not short-term price speculation," said Dong Ximiao, chief economist at Zhaolian and executive director of the Shanghai Finance and Development Laboratory. He noted that international gold prices are currently at historic highs with increased volatility, making short-term trading riskier. Ordinary investors should scientifically allocate gold assets based on their own risk tolerance, investment experience, and family asset conditions, avoiding speculative behavior of chasing rises and selling declines or blindly following trends.
