Strategy's Market Valuation Drops Below Bitcoin Holdings, Undermining Investor Confidence

The valuation of Strategy (MSTR.US) has for the first time fallen below the value of the Bitcoin it holds, a significant milestone that is eroding investor confidence in the long-term cryptocurrency strategy championed by founder Michael Saylor.

Investor attention has been focused on the company's "mNAV" metric, which compares its enterprise value to its Bitcoin holdings, ever since CEO Von Leh indicated late last year that the company might consider selling Bitcoin if this ratio fell below 1.

Earlier this month, Strategy reported its first Bitcoin sales since 2022, marking a notable shift for the world's largest corporate holder of the cryptocurrency.

The company reported a larger first-quarter loss, heavily impacted by a sharp decline in Bitcoin's price, which dragged down the value of its substantial crypto holdings.

As of the previous trading session's close, this ratio stood at 0.99, meaning the company's enterprise value is less than the value of the Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

Nick Puckrin, a cross-asset analyst and founder of Coin Bureau, stated, "This is bad news for overall investor sentiment towards crypto and Bitcoin, which was already near rock bottom."

He added, "Strategy was the only digital treasury company where investors maintained any confidence, but that confidence is now being eroded. We've already seen this reflected in the Bitcoin price."

With a market capitalization of $29.54 billion at the last close, the company's value is less than half of its all-time high of over $71 billion reached in 2024.

Its share price has plummeted more than 45% so far this year.

According to its website, Strategy recently held 847,363 Bitcoin. Based on Bitcoin's closing price of $59,577.82 on Sunday, this holding is worth approximately $50.4 billion.

The cryptocurrency market has been in a downturn this year amid heightened volatility, investor hype shifting towards anticipated large-scale traditional IPOs, and persistent outflows from ETFs that track the asset.

Bitcoin's recent trading price is near its lowest point in 20 months, with the global cryptocurrency market witnessing a dramatic fall from its peak since the start of 2026.

Looking back to October 2025, Bitcoin reached a record high of $126,223.18 per coin, fueled by a frenzy of institutional capital inflows and positive effects from its halving event.

However, this momentum did not carry into 2026.

Since the New Year, a sudden shift in the global macroeconomic environment, with high inflation pressuring central banks to maintain elevated interest rates, has led to a sustained tightening of global liquidity.

Simultaneously, market hype has shifted towards several upcoming mega-cap tech IPOs in traditional sectors, causing speculative capital that was parked in digital assets to exit in large volumes.

A more substantial blow has come from Bitcoin-tracking ETFs.

So far this year, Bitcoin spot ETFs, once the engine of the bull market, have faced an unprecedented and persistent storm of net outflows.

The exit of institutional investors has further intensified market panic.

Under this barrage of negative factors, Bitcoin's price has steadily lost key support levels throughout 2026, recently crashing to around $59,000.

This represents a complete halving from last year's peak and a 20-month low.

This prolonged slump has not only shattered the "digital gold" safe-haven myth but has also triggered a cascade of selling across the crypto market.

As the world's largest single corporate holder of Bitcoin, Strategy saw its first-quarter loss widen dramatically this year due to the price crash.

Its enterprise valuation has now historically fallen below the value of the Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

The collapse of this bellwether is dragging the market's remaining investor confidence to a freezing point.

In 2026, Bitcoin is facing a painful transition from liquidity-driven premiums to a fundamental reassessment of its value proposition.
